Vitamin A, B complex, C, & D
–Salicylates , Corticosteroids, NSAIDs
–NSAIDs (ibuprofen/advil), Acetaminophen, Salicylates –Inhibit synthesis of PG. Lower temp by action on heat regulating centers in hypothalamus.
–Sponge bath increases evaporative heat loss but will not decrease body temp unless antipyretic is given. Body will compensate with shivering to restore body heat. SAme with cooling blankets.
This is when a fever has delayed onset. This can delay dx and tx and by the time fever comes illness may be more severe. The population at risk is older adults and pts who take NSAIDs regularly.
–Greater than 104 can damage body cells, and delirium and seizures can occur. –Greater than 105.8 , regulationof hypothalamic temp control center becomes impaired. Severe damage including brain can occur.
Should be treated immediately with antibiotic therapy bc infx can rapidly progress to septicemia.
